Rebranding Mayfield School: Readying girls to make their mark on the world
Mayfield is a leading independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11–18, set in 75 acres of beautiful East Sussex countryside. While the school has a rich 150-year heritage and achieves outstanding academic results, its existing brand was struggling to reflect its modern, forward-thinking spirit and distinctive voice. Mayfield turned to Threerooms to define a clear, distinctive verbal and visual brand that would establish it as the stand-out choice in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

The challenge
Despite its success, Mayfield faced several perception gaps. Research showed that while parents and students were captivated once they experienced the school's magic, this wasn't being successfully communicated to prospective families beforehand. The school's existing values, vision, mission, and motto were all articulated differently, making it difficult for audiences to identify what Mayfield truly stood for. Furthermore, Mayfield's nurturing reputation meant that some perceived Mayfield as a soft option academically.
The strategic work
We began with a deep-dive discovery phase, conducting stakeholder interviews and a competitor analysis to uncover the school's essential truths. We identified that Mayfield's nurturing environment is not an end in itself, but the foundation that enables girls to explore, take risks, and achieve their authentic potential.
This led to the defining Brand DNA: "An adventurous spirit is good for the soul". This powerful narrative balances tradition with a progressive outlook, positioning Mayfield as a school that develops curious, courageous, and compassionate young women.
The outcome
The result is a unified, modern brand identity that accurately reflects Mayfield's pioneering spirit. We delivered a refreshed visual identity, comprehensive brand guidelines, and a redesigned website that prioritises compelling storytelling and clear user journeys. The new branding has been rolled out across key touchpoints, including a new prospectus and a brand awareness campaign. Internal alignment has also been strengthened, with staff and students united around a shared understanding of "the Mayfield difference".
